The transformation from a manufacturing to an experience economy has led to the emergence of a design discipline focused on the systems and services that define many of our everyday interactions. Service Design aims to enhance the human experience by delivering meaningful solutions that are targeted towards people’s needs and abilities.

Service Design at SIT focuses on identifying innovative ways of applying design processes to complex challenges. The MDes in Design Innovation & Service Design examines the social value of service design, as well as its economic importance. We seek to address real issues that affect real people, by understanding them from each stakeholder’s point of view in an evidence-led and purpose-driven process that makes a positive contribution to society.

The programme equips students with the thinking, tools and processes required to practice Service Design, so they can drive innovation in the conception, design and delivery of services and experiences. Live projects provide a rich experience of design-led innovation through collaborations with private and public sector organisations. The learning experience is further enhanced by direct input from leading Service Design professionals.

Our Approach

SIT is a community of designers and academics who operate within a wider network to deliver design-led innovation in a real-world context. We create a platform for collaboration by organising live projects with businesses and local communities, as well as public and private sector partners. Our studio-based approach to design and research results in a vibrant creative environment that supports various forms of interaction between faculty and students.
