The School of Innovation & Technology works with the Glasgow Library of Synthesised Sound (GLOSS) to provide memberships for all Sound For The Moving Image students in the MDes and BDes programmes.
GLOSS is a non-profit, community-based, artist-led, registered community interest company. It was started by Lewis and Suzi Cook, known as their dynamic music duo Free Love. Students in SIT have access to the fantastic array of analogue synthesisers through a membership deal that allows this spaceto be an extension of the teaching studio spaces. This has been made possible through extensive meetings with Ronan Breslin, Gordon Hush, and GLOSS.
Teaching within the digital design programmes as part of SIT is always a challenge, as we always want to change up the teaching locations tobe more dynamic and step away from the computer screen. The space provided byGLOSS has many workstations for students to work from and record their own musical samples and sound design from scratch.
Analogue synthesis equipment has a rich history of being used by artists from various economic or diverse backgrounds, which offers fruitful grounds as a teaching space for sound students to learn about the manyways modern music has been shaped by influential female figures (as exemplified in the 2020 feature documentary Sisters with Transistors by Lisa Rovner).
We are excited for what the future brings us, with students who will shape the meaning of studio for innovative sound practices.
