Interdisciplinary researcher and research developer at The Glasgow School of Art, Daisy Abbott will be presenting at Glasgow 2024, A WorldCon For Our Futures this coming Saturday.
WorldCon is the annual global science fiction convention of the World Science Fiction Society which is coming to Glasgow for the third time. Starting today and running until 12 August the programme includes talks, panels, signings and events.
Daisy will be presenting "Decolonising Narratives of the British Empire Exhibition of 1938" in the History of Scotland academic track.
The Glasgow School of Art has produced significant research into the 1938 exhibition, including the production of a meticulously researched photo-real, 3D model of over 100 buildings and structures that comprised the exhibition, three video interviews, recollections of visitors, use by schoolchildren, and immersive experiences in game engines and VR. At the conference Daisy will be showcasing this research and, crucially, demonstrate the need to reassess narratives of the Exhibition from a post-colonial perspective. Whilst earlier research focused on architectural achievements, research in 2022 used mixed-methodologies, including narrative co-design, to highlight the (previously-erased) voices of marginalised peoples and investigate polyvocal narratives about Glasgow's heritage. This preliminary study laid the groundwork for exploring decolonised approaches to heritage data further.
