Building a Transdisciplinary Network of Science and Society through Design Innovation
The CROSSOVER project aims to build a network of interdisciplinary exchange between science, society and design to develop transdisciplinary knowledge and practices that creatively address complex challenges and opportunities that arise with the advancement of scientific knowledge and technology.
To do this, the Innovation School’s Elio Caccavale and Dr Michael Pierre Johnson have been funded by the BiochemicalSociety and the Royal Society of Edinburgh Young Academy of Scotland to pilot three workshop programmes that bring together scientific, societal and creative storytelling disciplines from a core cluster of Glasgow-based academic institutes with national and international publics, experts and institutions.Participants will use Design Innovation approaches to share and co-create narratives connecting scientific knowledge to societal challenges, which aim to open up opportunities to explore transdisciplinary research related to understanding and caring for invisible diseases and community STEM education.
Following the international success ofThe Royal Society of Edinburgh online event ‘Mitochondria and Us’, co-organised with Professor Kostas Tokatlidis (University of Glasgow), the first CROSSOVER workshop will explore storytelling and visual ethnography to merge stories of people who work with, or are affected by, mitochondrial research and rare diseases.
We are now inviting demonstrations of interest from scientists, social scientists, science communicators, bioethicists, patient groups, writers, curators, videographers and design researchers who wish to participate in this workshop, which will take place online on Thursday 25th February 2021, 13:00 – 17:00.
If you would be interested in taking part, or simply being part of this network, please contact either Elio Caccavale – e.caccavale@gsa.ac.uk or Dr Michael Pierre Johnson – m.johnson@gsa.ac.uk by Mon 8th February, as there is a limited number of places available.
For more information, please see the outlining the Mitochondria and Us workshop call here and the CROSSOVER network aims and background here. This work has built on the success our original Crossover Workshop collaboration in November 2019 between the Innovation School and the BiochemicalSociety to explore the potential for exchanges between design and biochemical sciences.
